Running hot but no warning light

Not totally sure where this post fits but I'm helping my mom with her 2023 Volkswagen Taos S that's running hotter than it should. Fans are roaring but no warning light and the oil temp gauge can't seem to make up its mind. Could it be a sensor giving bad info or something deeper in the cooling setup?

The coolant level in the reservoir's right where it should be but I don't have a scanner to pull any codes. It mostly acts up in town during stop and go driving. Is this something that needs to go to the dealer immediately or can she still drive it locally?

Modern VW cooling systems are overcomplicated by design. It's probably a flaky sensor confusing the ECU, but I wouldn't rule out a stuck thermostat either. Volkswagen loves using plastic housings that warp over time, it could be a simple part causing your overheating headache

Thanks for the extra information about the plastic parts. We took the car to the dealership for service last week to be certain. It turned out to be a problem with the thermostat assembly just as you both suggested. The dealer replaced the unit under warranty and the issue is now resolved.

Great was just about to mention the thermostat now, but its fantastic you got it resolved alright. At least I've learned something new

If the temps don't go too high she might use it in an emergency, but I wouldn't recommend being too relaxed about this. There is obviously a problem and the car is under warranty, so let the dealership figure things out and service it.
