Brake Replacement

i was swapping out the rear brake pads on my 2022 VW Taos SE. used a Carista OBD2 sensor to get it into brake service mode. left side went fine, but on the right, the piston wouldn't push all the way back.. i took it out of service mode and the piston popped out completely. now it won't go back into service mode and im stuck on how to fix it or get the piston back in.. any tips?

Sounds like the electronic parking brake motor may have lost its position after the piston popped out. just don't try to force it back in, you could damage the motor.Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, then reconnect and attempt to put it back into service mode using Carista. If that doesn't work, you may need VCDS or OBD11 to reset the EPB module. Also if the piston is fully out, you might have introduced air into the system, so you could be looking at a full brake bleed. Worst case, you may need to manually retract the piston using a caliper tool or remove the EPB motor and turn the gear inside carefully.
But if you feel like you don't want to mess it up further, a shop with VCDS can likely reset and re-seat everything for you.

Oof, that sounds rough @SarumanAM700. If you haven’t tried yet, disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then attempting service mode again usually resets the EPB module. Otherwise, a shop with VCDS can get the piston seated safely without risking the motor.
